Five years after his debut, this third disc Love At The End Of The World appears to have achieved a solid balance between radio-friendly rock and rootsy jams, and is more than capable of pleasing both palates. For the most part, Borns commentary is divided into two topics: love and politics. Lyrically, Roberts is subtle and sharp throughout; his first single Them Kids is done in a sing/talk style that evokes the spirit of Dylans Subterranean Homesick Blues and reflects on musics past and future; overtop of an up-tempo melody, Roberts emotes the kids dont know how to dance to rock and roll. The Pilgrim is another standout, including a musical invocation to world leaders that asserts I hope its clear as crystal/That the man with the pistol/Is calling all the shots these days.
