Details: Felix Stussi has been a fixture on the Montreal scene for close to two decades. In 2010 he put together a trio with two local stalwarts, bassist Daniel Lessard and drummer Pierre Tanguay. The bands name, Les Malcommodes, which roughly translates as the cantankerous ones, is by no means a nuisance; in fact its both playful and witty, thanks to the leaders Monkish leanings. It is this unit that underpins this new project of his. I turned 50, he states, so I wanted to treat myself by casting players I like very much individually, but who have never really played together before. The most important, though, is that they all dig my new compositions and arrangements, because if they are not, how could the audience enjoy the music? Looking at the lineup, it is indeed eclectic: the twin saxophonists, Jean Derome and Andre Leroux, are the veterans, yet their musical pursuits are vastly different; trumpeter Jacques Kuba Seguin and vocalist Sonia Johnson (singing both the pianists and her own lyrics) are of a younger generation; last but not least, the stellar Ray Anderson returns to Stussis fold, chipping in with an original and some fanciful vocal work as well.
