Everybody’s favourite cult musical was always tacky, cheap, sexy, outrageous and compelling. But its many incarnations since it first opened as an amateur production at the Royal Court Upstairs in 1973 have never equalled the sheer sense of fun and joy that were the hallmark of the original. In keeping with the impoverished production values of its first tentative steps into musical history, the cast album was made in just 24 hours and, to be honest, much of it sounds as if it was recorded in a broom cupboard with domestic utensils substituting for instruments. Never mind. It’s utterly irresistible. Tim Curry’s Frank ‘n’ Furter (« Sweet Transvestite ») has never been bettered, while the duet between Janet and Rocky (« Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me ») is a high camp celebration of loucheness.
