Various flavors of pop are the thing, from Semisonic and Fastball tracks that could get them back on the radio to the sexy Vitamin C-like strut of Touch & Go’s « Straight to… Number One. » The quality is mostly high, apart from dull cuts by boy-group Youngstown, lite-rockers Nine Days, and singer-songwriter Dylan O’Brian. Nothing fully captures the dazzle of under-20 love (or lust), though energy flies off Dandy Warhols’ fabulous Stones rip « Bohemian Like You » and Uncle Kracker gets wittier than boss Kid Rock on his Michael Stipe-goes-swamp-rock « Mr. Hawkins. » Finally, with « Skin, » Collective Soul knock off another set of those hooks that end up catching even nonfans.–Rickey Wright
